A Polarsteps alternative that doesn't track you

Polarsteps auto-tracks your trips with background location and an account. If you want the map without the live tracking and the cloud, here's a private alternative built from your photos.

Short answer: if you love the idea of an automatic travel map but not the background location tracking and cloud account that come with apps like Polarsteps, the alternative is an app that builds the same map from the photos already on your phone, entirely on-device — Flags: Countries Visited Map.

What Polarsteps does well — and the cost

Polarsteps automatically records your trips and draws a beautiful map. It does that by tracking your location in the background and keeping your travel history in its cloud, behind an account. Great for sharing a live travel feed; less great if you'd rather your movements weren't continuously logged to a server.

The private alternative

You don't need live tracking to map where you've been — your camera already noted it. Flags reads only the date and coarse place-stamp each photo carries and turns it into a country, using offline maps on your iPhone:

  • No background location. No "tracking your trip" in real time.
  • No account, no cloud. Your map lives on your phone; delete the app and it's gone.
  • No feed, no followers. It's a private record, not a social network.
  • You still share when you want — by exporting an image of your map, not a link to your data.

What you give up (honestly)

No live "where am I right now" trail, and no social feed — by design. If a real-time shared journey is the point, Polarsteps wins. If the goal is a private map of everywhere you've been, the photo approach gets you there without the tracking.

Flags is free to start; Pro adds automatic photo scanning, unlimited countries, and shareable exports. See also: what's the best travel map app.
