There is no official rule, so this counter uses one simple, consistent definition: a country counts once you have set foot in it — cleared the border and spent time on the ground. A layover where you never leave the airport transit zone does not count, and neither does flying over. Pick the rule that feels honest to you and keep it the same each time; what matters is that your number means the same thing year after year.
The default list is the 193 United Nations member states. Switch to the extended mode to add the two UN observer states (the Holy See and Palestine) and a curated set of well-known territories and dependencies — Puerto Rico, Hong Kong, Greenland, French Polynesia and more. Both are fixed reference lists, so your saved count stays stable rather than shifting with the news.
