Countries Visited Map privacy and permissions

How a photo-based travel map differs from live location tracking, and what you control in Flags.

Flags is designed to build a map from travel information you choose to provide, rather than collecting a continuous location trail. For a personal travel map, that distinction changes both the sort of data involved and the amount of checking you need to do.

No live tracker

The purpose of the app is a private record of where you have been, not a real-time feed of where you are. Its App Store listing describes no account, no cloud and no GPS tracking. It is therefore intended for looking back over travel history rather than broadcasting an itinerary as it happens.

It is still sensible to decide what you want a map to represent. A country remembered from a childhood trip, an airport connection and a place where you spent a week may all be meaningful to different people. The app provides a personal record, not a universal definition of a visit.

You can add by hand

Manual additions are available for trips without usable photos. They also give you a way to apply your own definition of a visit without handing over more device data than you want to. Use them for older travel, journeys with no photos, or a country you want to include after a deliberate choice.

Review photo-based suggestions before accepting them. Photo information can be incomplete, and a camera-roll date or location is not necessarily the whole story of a trip. The map-building guide explains how photo history and manual additions work together.

Website versus app

Your travel history stays separate from website browsing. The website has its own limited measurement and support-data practices; it is not the map in the app. Read the privacy policy for the precise website policy.

If you are comparing travel-map apps, ask practical questions: whether a live location feed is involved, whether an account is required, and whether your history is stored as a provider-managed profile. Flags is designed for a private personal map built from photo information and manual additions.
